The beginning of HAL can be traced to the year 1940 when afar sighted industrialist, the late Seth Walchand Hirachand, set up acompany called Hindustan Aircraft Limited at Bangalore with theobject of establishing an aviation industry that can manufacture,assemble and overhaul aircraft. Initially aircraft like Curtiss Hawk,Vultee Bomber and Harlow Trainer was taken up for manufactureand overhaul in collaboration with Inter Continental AircraftCompany of the USA.With the escalation of the Second World War, the governmentof India took over the management of the company in 1942 andhanded it over to US Air force for repair and overhaul of variousaircraft. The main activity for the next few years after the war wasreconditioning and conversion of war surplus aircraft for the use of IAF and Civil Operators. To fulfill the fresh mandate of the post independent India andto meet the challenges of open market economy of recent times themission of the company has been redefined as:“To become a globally competitive aerospace industry whileworking as instrument for achieving self reliance in design,manufacture and maintenance of aerospace defense equipment anddiversifying to related areas, managing the business on commerciallines in a climate of growing professional competence.”In the six decades, HAL has spread its wings to cover variousactivities in the areas of design, development, manufacture andmaintenance. Today HAL has 14 production divisions spread over atBangalore, Nasik, Koraput, Kanpur, Lucknow, Korwa, Hyderabad andBarrackpore. These divisions are fully backed by 9 design centers,which are co-located with the productive divisions. These centersare engaged in the design and development of combat aircraft,helicopter, aero engine, engine test beds, aircraft communicationand navigation systems and accessories of mechanical and fuelsystems and instruments
